The AranLIFE project had a visit last week of farmers from another large limestone area of Ireland, South West Fermanagh. The Fermanagh limestone grasslands are part of the West Fermanagh Scarplands SAC and the Marlbank ASSI and are also a farmed area with a High Nature Value. After visiting the sunny islands, the group travelled to the less sunny Burren to look at the BurrenLife programme. This was a great opportunity to bring together farmers from the main limestone grassland areas of Ireland and discuss the different issues facing the areas, and to demonstrate how the AranLIFE and Burren Life are working with farmers to improve the agricultural and ecological output. Other than the general agri-environment schemes there are no such projects on going for the farmers in the Fermanagh limestones areas.

Thug grúpa feirmeoirí as ceantar mór aolchloiche eile in Éirinn, Iardheisceart Fear Manach, cuairt ar thogra AranLIFE an tseachtain seo caite. Tá féarthailte aolchloiche Fhear Manach mar pháirt de LCS Scairpcheantar Fear Manach Thiar agus ASSI Marlbank agus is ceantar feirmeoireachta iad le Meas ar an Dúlra. Tar éis cuairt a ghlacadh ar na hoileáin grianmhar, thaisteal an grúpa chomh fada leis an Bhoireann, ná raibh chomh grianmhar, chun féachaint ar an gclár Burren Life. Ba deis iontach a bhí anseo chun feirmeoirí as príomhcheantair féarthailte aolchloiche na hÉireann a thabhairt le chéile agus chun plé a dhéanamh ar na saincheisteanna éagsúla a thugtar aghaidh orthu sna ceantair seo, agus chun léiriú conas mar atá AranLIFE agus Burren Life ag oibriú in éineacht le feirmeoirí chun feabhas a chuir ar an toradh talmhaíochta agus éiceolaíochta. Seachas na scéimeanna comhshaol talmhaíochta ginearálta, níl aon togra dá leithéid ar siúl do fheirmeoirí i gceantair aolchloiche Fhear Manach.
